Here’s everything we know about the Harry Potter TV show, the rumored television spinoff of the Wizarding World, including any release date updates, cast announcements, plot, and more.

2022 was a great year for franchises on the small screen, from HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon to Amazon Studios’ Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power. But one spinoff that’s yet to be magicked into existence is one of the biggest and most successful IPs in the world: Harry Potter.

There’s no denying there’s a market for it – fans have been calling for a small-screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s best-selling book series ever since the last movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, dropped back in 2011. Talks reignited once more last month when Warner Bros. announced new plans to extend the Wizarding World.

After the series was confirmed by HBO – and met with an incredibly negative response – here’s everything we know about the Harry Potter TV show so far.

Harry Potter TV show cast: Who’s in it?

As of April 2023, no casting has been announced for Harry Potter Season 1.

The same press release confirmed series will feature a “new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”

If and when that does happen, we’ll be excited to see who will be filling the shoes of the characters. That includes our Hogwarts heroes Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, played in the movies by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint respectively.

The series has been met with backlash for various reasons, from Rowling’s controversial comments about transgender people to the idea of the show altogether. While many fans have expressed concerns over the inevitable failure to recapture the magic of the series and the attachment to the actors, others have been trying to fill the roles with a few proposed casting coups.

As for the original cast, there’s a chance they could appear in some capacity, either in cameos, flash-forwards to their adult selves, or filling out roles in meta fashion – we’re betting on Tom Felton playing Lucius Malfoy.

Harry Potter TV show plot: What is it about?

The Harry Potter show will last 10 years and adapt all seven books in J.K. Rowling’s series of novels.

A press release described it as a “decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for… each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

According to Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, said it will be a “faithful adaptation” of the books.

“Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

It’s unclear how the books will be split between seasons. It’s assumed The Philosopher’s Stone – yes, that’s right – will last one season, but the likes of The Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows may be spread across multiple seasons.

As well as allowing for the story to be told on screen in more depth than the movies, it would also pave the way for a new range of actors to have a shot at portraying the beloved characters.

Rowling will be an executive producer on the series. “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” she said in a statement.
